History of Satpura National Park
The history of Satpura National Park is deeply rooted in central India’s ancient landscapes, tribal heritage, and the growth of modern wildlife conservation. Long before it became a protected reserve, the Satpura region was a remote and rugged forested terrain, inhabited by indigenous communities and rich in wildlife diversity.
Ancient & Tribal Roots
For centuries, the forests and hills of Satpura were home to tribal communities such as the Gond and Korku, who lived in close harmony with nature. These tribes depended on the forest for food, shelter, and livelihood, and possessed deep knowledge of wildlife behavior, forest ecology, and traditional medicinal plants. Ancient rock shelters and cave paintings found in the region point to early human habitation dating back thousands of years.
Forest Legacy & Colonial Era
During the British period, Satpura’s dense forests were explored for timber and forest resources. Due to its rugged terrain and inaccessibility, large parts of Satpura remained relatively undisturbed compared to other regions. Transition to a Protected Area
