Bandhavgarh National Park
Bandhavgarh National Park is one of India’s most renowned wildlife destinations, located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. It is especially famous for having one of the highest densities of Royal Bengal Tigers in the country, making it a prime location for tiger sightings. Bandhavgarh is not just about wildlife—it also has deep historical significance. At the heart of the park lies the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort, believed to be over 2,000 years old. According to mythology, Lord Rama gifted this fort to his brother Lakshmana, giving the park its name (“Bandhav” = brother, “Garh” = fort).
About Bandhavgarh National Park
The Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve covers an area of over 1,100 square kilometers, with a core zone spanning approximately 440 square kilometers. A tiger safari in Bandhavgarh is an exciting and memorable experience, led by knowledgeable guides and skilled drivers. Many of the safari routes used today follow the same paths once walked by legendary tigers, now continued by their descendants. Visitors also gain insight into traditional tiger-tracking techniques through the experience and knowledge of local forest experts.
The landscape of Bandhavgarh is largely dominated by Sal and Bamboo forests, but its true scenic charm is best witnessed in the Tala Zone. This area is famous for its open grasslands, encircled by steep hills where ancient forts and watchtowers—dating back to the 10th century—stand as silent witnesses to history. A major attraction here is the iconic 60-foot reclining statue of Lord Vishnu, located at the heart of the Tala Zone, offering a serene and spiritual presence amid the peaceful forest surroundings.

History of Bandhavgarh National Park
The history of Bandhavgarh is as rich and fascinating as its wildlife. Long before it became one of India’s most famous tiger reserves, Bandhavgarh was a center of ancient civilization, royal hunting grounds, and historical importance.
Ancient Origins
At the heart of the park stands the majestic Bandhavgarh Fort, believed to be over 2,000 years old. According to Hindu mythology, the fort was gifted by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana, from whom the name Bandhavgarh is derived (Bandhav meaning brother and Garh meaning fort). The fort area is dotted with ancient temples, sculptures, caves, and inscriptions dating back to the 10th century and earlier.
Royal Hunting Grounds
For centuries, the forests of Bandhavgarh served as a royal hunting reserve for the Maharajas of Rewa. The region was once known as Shahdol forest and was famous for its abundant wildlife, especially tigers. The last known white tiger, Mohan, was captured from this region in 1951, bringing global attention to Bandhavgarh’s unique tiger population.
Transition to a Protected Area
Recognizing its ecological and historical value, Bandhavgarh was declared a National Park in 1968. Later, in 1993, it was designated as a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger, strengthening conservation efforts and helping revive the tiger population.

Today, Bandhavgarh National Park is internationally recognized for having one of the highest tiger densities in India. Strict conservation policies have transformed it into a successful model for wildlife protection while preserving its rich historical legacy.

Types of Safari in Bandhavgarh National Park
Bandhavgarh offers different types of safari experiences, each designed to showcase its rich wildlife, landscapes, and biodiversity. Visitors can choose a safari based on their interests, time, and adventure level.
Jeep Safari
The Jeep Safari is the most popular and widely preferred option in Bandhavgarh. Conducted in open 4×4 vehicles, it allows visitors to explore core zones like Tala, Magadhi, and Khitauli. This safari offers excellent chances to spot Royal Bengal Tigers, along with leopards, deer, sloth bears, and birds. Jeep safaris operate twice daily—morning and evening.
Elephant Safari
The Elephant Safari provides a unique and traditional wildlife experience. Conducted on elephant-back, it allows close interaction with forest surroundings and is often used for tracking tigers in dense areas. This safari is subject to availability and forest department permissions and usually runs in selected zones during early hours.
Nature Walk & Bird Watching
For nature lovers, guided nature walks and bird-watching tours are available in buffer areas. These safaris focus on the park’s flora, butterflies, reptiles, and birdlife, making them ideal for photographers and peaceful exploration.
Night Safari (Buffer Zone)
The Night Safari is conducted only in designated buffer zones. It offers a chance to observe nocturnal wildlife such as jackals, foxes, owls, and other night-active species. This safari provides a completely different forest experience under expert supervision.
Canter Safari (Limited Availability)
The Canter Safari is conducted in larger open vehicles and is suitable for groups. Availability is limited in Bandhavgarh and depends on forest regulations. It offers a shared safari experience at a lower cost.
