History of Panna National Park
The history of Panna National Park is closely linked with the natural heritage of the Vindhya ranges and the cultural history of central India. Long before it became a protected wildlife reserve, the region was known for its dense forests, river valleys, and thriving wildlife.
Ancient & Cultural Roots
Panna lies near the ancient city of Khajuraho, home to the world-famous Khajuraho temples, indicating the region’s historical and cultural importance. The forests around Panna were once part of ancient trade routes and royal territories, supporting both human settlements and wildlife.

Types of Safari in Panna National Park

Jeep Safari
The Jeep Safari is the primary and most popular safari option in Panna National Park. Conducted in open 4×4 vehicles, it allows visitors to explore core zones of the park and scenic forest routes along the Ken River. This safari offers good opportunities to spot Royal Bengal Tigers, leopards, sloth bears, hyenas, deer, and a wide variety of birds. Jeep safaris operate twice daily—morning and evening—under forest department regulations.
Boat Safari (Ken River)
Boat safaris in Panna are conducted on selected stretches of the Ken River.
