Ghughua Fossil National Park

Ghughua Fossil National Park, also known as Mandla Plant Fossils National Park, is one of the most unique natural heritage sites in India, located in the Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh. Unlike wildlife parks, Ghughua is famous for its well-preserved plant fossils that date back over 65 million years. The park offers a rare glimpse into prehistoric vegetation and ancient ecosystems, making it an important site for geological research and education. Ghughua stands as a living record of Earth’s ancient past and natural evolution.

About Ghughua Fossil National Park

Ghughua Fossil National Park, also known as Mandla Plant Fossils National Park, is one of India’s most extraordinary and lesser-known natural heritage sites. Located in the Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh, this park stands apart from conventional national parks by preserving a remarkable collection of ancient plant fossils rather than living wildlife.

The fossils found at Ghughua date back over 65 million years, to the period when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and dramatic geological changes were reshaping the planet. Scattered across the forest floor are fossilized tree trunks, branches, leaves, seeds, and palm impressions—many of them preserved in stunning detail. These remains belong to prehistoric plant species that once thrived in a warm, humid climate, offering valuable clues about India’s ancient environment.

The fossil beds were discovered by scientists in the mid-20th century, revealing fossilized tree trunks, leaves, seeds, and wood. These findings offered rare insights into Earth’s ancient ecosystems.

Transition to a Protected Area

To preserve this invaluable geological heritage, the region was declared a National Fossil Park in 1983, ensuring protection from damage and unauthorized collection.

Present Day

Today, Ghughua Fossil National Park is a center for geological research, education, and eco-tourism. It stands as a living museum of Earth’s ancient past, offering visitors a journey through time rather than a traditional wildlife safari.
